How to Set Properly Your Trailer Brake Controller
Your brake controller determines how strongly your trailer brakes apply. Proper adjustment improves stopping control and prevents unsafe towing.
Start Low When Towing Empty
Begin with a low brake gain setting (typically 1–2) when the trailer is empty. This prevents harsh braking and keeps stops smooth.
Increase Gain When Loaded
Increase gain once a vehicle or equipment is loaded. If the trailer pushes the tow vehicle, raise the gain. If braking feels jerky or grabby, lower it slightly.
Re-Check Brakes After a Few Miles
Brake response can change as the load settles. Stop after a short drive and fine-tune the gain if braking feels uneven.
Use Max Gain Only in Emergencies
Maximum gain should only be used for emergency braking, steep downhill control, or stabilizing trailer sway — not normal driving.
